What are the treatments for Depression?

The treatment for depression depends entirely on the severity of the symptoms. Minor depression can often benefit from some practical and easy changes, that you can make yourself. These may include:

  • Taking a break from your normal routine, and getting away from it all
  • Talking things over with friends and family, or those that have overcome similar difficulties to those you are facing
  • A change aspects of your life that may have caused the depression
  • Joining a supporting group of people that may be in a similar position to yourself

If you feel your depression is severe and is unlikely to respond to self help, you must see a medical professional, who will make an assessment of the the most beneficial type of treatment. The most popular type of treatment is a range of psychological therapies which aim to get to the source of the depression.

The second type of treatment available from your medical professional, is that of drug therapy. This can be prescribed in isolation or in combination with psychotherapy. The actual drugs (antidepressants) prescribed will again depend on the severity of the depression. Antidepressants are a very effective treatment for depression, when they are taken as prescribed, often resulting in obvious improvements within weeks of starting the course.
