What are the symptoms of Depression?

To re-iterate what was said in the previous page, the symptoms of depression vary vastly from one person to the next, to the extent that two people can be classed as clinically depression but have completely different physical and psychological symptoms. However there are some symptoms that are relatively common in those suffering from clinical depression. They can be broadly broken down into Psychological and physical:

Psychological symptoms of depression:

  • Low moods for more than a couple of weeks
  • Loss of interest in things that you would normally enjoy
  • Unexplained anxiety
  • Doom and gloom thinking
  • Difficulty in maintaining concentration and remembering information
  • Thoughts of suicide

Physical symptoms of depression:

  • Difficulty in going to sleep or waking up anxiously a number of times a night
  • Slowing down physically
  • Increase or decrease in your appetite
  • Increase or decrease in weight
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • A constant feeling of lethargy
  • Constipation
  • Changes in the pattern of menstruation
