What is a Migraine?
A migraine is a moderate to severe headache that can occur on one or both sides of the head. The headache will normally last between 4 and 72 hours and is usually accompanied by symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Some attacks of migraine are often preceded by an aura typically of visual symptoms. Between migraine attacks the individual is completely symptom free. Migraines are believed to be caused by changes in the blood flow in the vessels of the head. Changes in blood flow to different areas of the brain can produce a variety of symptoms. An attack of migraine can be very frightening, especially in the pre migraine Aura stage of the process. Usually the strongest of symptoms begin to ease after about 24hrs. However once the symptoms have gone it takes about 2 days to fully recover. The frequency of migraine attacks vary quite considerably from individual to individual. Some have attacks as frequently as once or twice or week others having a similar number of attacks in a year. In general the frequency of attacks begin to decline after about the age of 50. Migraine affects more women than men, and is thought to be linked to the hormonal changes in women. Research shows that migraines are equally prevalent in boys and girls until the puberty years when women seem to surge ahead in the number of sufferers.
