What is Depression?

Everybody has low moods from time to time, often triggered by events in our lives such as a death in the family, or the break up of a relationship. We may cry or loose sleep often becoming anxious and hypersensitive to trivial issues. Usually the mood passes in a few days and we get back to our normal selves. This is not depression!

Depression is an illness of both mind and body, where sufferers will generally have both physical and psychological symptoms. The low moods last for more than a couple of weeks and affects all parts of your life, sometimes resulting in thoughts of suicide. Here are some common facts about depression:

  • Depression affects all age groups.
  • Women are diagnosed with Depression at almost twice the rate of men.
  • Ninety percent of people with Depression are successfully treated by their General Medical practitioner.
