What is Asthma?
Asthma is a very common disease that causes difficulty in moving air in and out of the lungs as we breath. The lungs are very much like an upturned tree with each branch ending in yet another smaller branch and so on and onwards towards the leaves. Your lungs are very similar and continue to branch into ever smaller structures, with air passing from your mouth down your windpipe into the smaller airways called bronchi and then onto air spaces called alveoli.
Asthma sufferers have problems in moving air from the windpipe through the bronchi into the alveoli and into the blood stream. This is caused by the narrowing of the bronchi which arises as a result of the inflammation of the lining of the airways. This inflammation causes the trachea to become very sensitive and any irritation results in coughing and tightening of the muscles around the lungs. The final effect is the production of sticky mucus or phlegm as the airways start to swell. So to be completely clear on the question what is asthma - the answer is simply 'asthma causes a reduction in the size of the airways, and that produces the symptoms. What are the symptoms of Asthma?
