What is an Allergy?
An allergic reaction occurs when the body's immune system over reacts to a usually harmless substance, for example a type of food or a particular drug. The symptoms of this over reaction can be as mild as a runny nose and itchy eyes or at the more severe end, difficulty in breathing and an acute cough. There are some allergic reactions that can be fatal. The substances in the environment that cause allergic reactions are commonly known as allergens. Surprisingly almost anything can be an allergen for someone, although there are some common allergens that cause allergic reactions in many people. These common allergens include:
It is generally the protein within allergens that cause the allergic reactions in people. Allergic people all have what is commonly known as a 'trigger' which sparks of the symptoms of an allergy. Every person with an allergy is sensitive to different triggers, and learning to avoid the the relevant ones is an important stage in managing the allergy. The trigger does not necessarily have to be the substance to which the individual is allergic. It can be something as simple as a common cold, or cigarette smoke, that triggers the reaction.
